What Is A Thrust Ball Bearing？
Thrust bearings are a specific type of rotary bearing intended to support axial loads and reduce friction. When in motion, a machine’s rotating parts glide along the thrust bearings, which are designed to permit and assist rotation around a fixed shaft or axis. Primary functions of thrust bearings include transferring thrust loads applied on the shaft and preventing the shaft from drifting in the axial direction.
Typically, thrust bearings are placed against a raised thrust collar around a shaft. The thrust collar permits the transference of the axial load from the shaft to the bearing. In most situations, thrust collars are used in pairs, situated on either side of the thrust collar.

Thrust bearings support a force applied in the same direction as the shaft. They can be categorized into two major types: Thrust ball bearing and Thrust roller bearing.

Thrust Ball Bearing Installation:
When installing unidirectional thrust bearings, it is important to distinguish between shaft washers and housing washers. The inner hole of the shaft washer is ground and is always smaller than the inner hole of the housing washer. Shaft washers should always be placed on shaft steps or fixed shaft components.
What You Should Know About Thrust Ball Bearing Carriers:
Thrust ball bearing carries are used for applications where axial loads are minimal or low. They come in a variety of materials and shapes, so you can find the perfect solution for your application.
The main component of thrust ball bearing is the rolling element, which is the main bearing structure. These include spheres, cones, needles, and cylindrical rollers (or balls), all of which reduce friction and provide reliable rotational motion.
There are raceways around the rolling element to ensure smooth operation of the rotating component. These raceways are usually protected by seals to prevent the entry of moisture and debris, as well as the escape of lubricant.
What Is The Purpose Of Thrust Ball Bearing？
A variety of applications and industries rely on thrust bearings, such as centrifuges and various medical equipment. Other common applications include:
- Automotive. Thrust bearings are used in vehicles to support the axial forces caused by helical gears in the gearboxes of modern automobiles.
- Transportation. Thrust bearings are very important to the transportation industry because they enable more powerful and improved engines and propellers.
- Generators and water turbines. Certain types of thrust bearings reduce friction and drag, making them ideal for generators and water turbines.
- Heavy-Duty Machinery. Thrust bearings with high load ratings are suitable for heavy machinery such as drilling RIGS and cranes.
- Industrial Machinery. Several types of industrial machinery have a need for rotating shafts, making thrust bearings a crucial component.
- Mining & Construction. Thrust bearings are typically made of corrosion-resistant materials, enabling them to support the axial load of equipment in harsh mining and construction environments.
Thrust Ball Bearing Types:
Sealed thrust ball bearings include single-direction thrust ball bearings and two-way thrust ball bearings.
Single-direction thrust ball bearings are gasket-like bearing rings with raceway slots. Double-direction thrust ball bearings have three rings, with a center ring fixed to the shaft.
Angular contact ball thrust bearings are designed to accommodate both radial and thrust loads with their large thrust carrying capacity being the primary design feature. These bearings are inch series and typically have an angle of contact around 50 degrees. Specific applications are indexing tables and oilfield rotary table bearings.
Deep groove ball bearings are the most widely used bearing type and are particularly versatile. They have low friction and are optimized for low noise and low vibration which enables high rotational speeds. They accommodate radial and axial loads in both directions, are easy to mount, and require less maintenance than other bearing types.
Radial thrust ball bearings are the most commonly used anti-friction bearings, with many variations and types. They can withstand a combination of radial and thrust loads, or pure thrust loads in either direction at high speeds.
The basic design of a radial thrust bearing consists of two spherical elements separated by a cage or housing washer.
A single direction thrust ball bearing can handle axial loads only in one direction and can locate a shaft only in the axial direction. However, they are not suitable for radial loads. They have a shaft and housing washer with a raceway, and a ball and cage assembly. Housing washers come with flat or sphered seating surfaces
Thrust ball bearing double direction can adapt to axial loads in both directions. This allows them to position the shaft in both directions, which means they can limit radial displacement and ensure that the shaft stays straight during operation.
These bearings are designed to accommodate high speed axial loads.

Thrust Ball Bearing Housing
A thrust ball bearing housing is a machine component used to support a rolling element in a thrust ball bearing. These components are used in a variety of industrial applications, including automotive and Marine machinery.
The main purpose of thrust ball bearings is to maintain axial load, which is the force occurring along the axis of the rotation axis. However, they are not suitable for supporting radial loads.
We offer a wide range of thrust ball bearing housing, including unidirectional and bidirectional designs. Both designs feature shaft and shell washers with raceways, as well as ball and cage assemblies.
